In the afternoon of May 25th, the appointment ceremony to inaugurate Prof. Colin Dodds as Honorary Professor was held in BNUZ International Center. Connie Li, Counsellor of Canadian Embassy in Guangzhou, Professor Ailan Fu, Vice President of BNUZ, Dr. Chunyan Gan, Director of Office of International Exchange and Cooperation, together with the faculty and students from BNUZ-SMU Finance Cooperative Program, attended the ceremony and the following academic lecture given by Prof. Colin Dodds.
Vice President Prof. Fu awarded Prof. Dodds with the appointment certificate. She said: "I hope Prof. Colin Dodds could give lessons and lectures at BNUZ annually." amist student’s rounds of applause showing their warm welcome to Prof. Dodds. Prof. Fu also said that Prof. Dodd’s onboard at BNUZ will greatly improve our teaching and research quality and she hoped that Prof. Dodds could continue to contribute to BNUZ’s development.
Prof. Colin Dodds began teaching finance courses since 1982 and became a professor at Saint Mary's University later then. After that, he worked as the Dean of MBA programme at Sobey Business School and currently he is the president of SMU. At the same time, he is member of organizations of Canadian domestic and international finance and education, including board member of the Bank of Canada, board member of Canadian University of World Service Organization, Director of Asia Pacific Foundation and Chairman of Canada Nova Scotia Innovation Fund, etc. Professor Colin Dodds made huge contribution to educational and financial business.
After the ceremony, Prof. Dodds delivered an academic lecture themed as "Global Finance - Beauty and the Beast" and exchanged ideas and thoughts with the present faculty and students. In the lecture, Prof. Dodds analyzed two sides of the global finance, where he defined as “beauty” and “beast”. That is, on the one hand, it promotes the development of the country and the corporate; on the other hand, it brings risks. At last, Prof. Dodds concluded that no matter what kind of economic bubbles or economic crisis breaks out, the reasons can be summed up as “High Leverage” and “Poor Quality Credit”.
After the lecture, students from BNUZ-SMU Finance Cooperative Program, presented a secret gift to Prof. Dodds. A Plum Flower painting. all the pedals on the painting are made from the finger prints of students to show their thanks to Prof. Dodds’ contribution to international education.
