Lecture Series by Foreign Teachers: Experiencing Different Culture

The lecture series by foreign teachers is a regular special event held by BNUZ School of Foreign Languages, which has always been well received by faculty members and students. Through this event, students can not only gain more understanding about other cultures, but also improve their English skills and the ability of critical thinking.

Foreign teachers of The School of Foreign Languages have carried out three lectures in this semester. The topics touched on the culture, food and traditions in different countries, and also the differences between oriental and western educational system. Such wonderful lecture series have attracted many teaching faculties and students who are interested in English and foreign cultures.

At the night of March 12th, Ms. Kayoko Matsushima, teacher from Japan, held the first lecture about Japanese Traditional Cuisine Culture. She stressed that "washoku” refers to Japanese traditional food, but not the food served in most restaurants nowadays. She also introduced features of Japanese traditional food and through photos of making rice rolls in her hometown, students gained a vivid visual experience about the Japanese cuisine culture.

The second lecture was given by Mr. Landies Duffett at the night of March 27th, with a topic on the humanistic education. Mr. Landis Duffett pointed out that people with different cultural backgrounds hold various opinions about the humanistic education. Moreover, he explained that considering the practical significance, US government has attached more importance in the education of science, technology, engineering and mathematics than in the education of humanity. The lecture briefed the current situation of humanistic education in US, which aroused students’ reflection to humanistic education in China.

On April 10th, the third lecture was unveiled by Mr. Michael Hughes, with the topic on university life in western countries. Mr. Michael Hughes gave a presentation about some cities in US and their local famous universities, and compared the differences between western and Chinese universities. In addition, he introduced some student organizations in western universities, including clubs, fraternities and sororities, and also touched upon the driving culture in US. The lecture was cited by students as an impressive one.

The School Of Foreign Languages has kept the tradition of holding lecture series given by foreign teachers on various topics and in various forms. Such direct communication between students and teachers provides a significant platform for students to expand their horizons and develop communication skills, which will play an essential role in their future studies and life.
